Last year we lost a very special team member, Maya Gray — team San Diego’s golden mascot of happiness and official Very Good Girl. After 11 years of greeting guests with cozy knee-high hugs, bringing undeniable elegance to the office, with her matching bandanas and bows, and spear-heading the Potluck Clean-Up Crew, we were forced to say goodbye far too soon.
In Maya’s memory, a donation was made to the National Canine Cancer Foundation. Additionally, we decided to make this one-time tribute coffee, featuring our beautiful girl on the bag. Just for the love of it.
Mexico NKG Bloom Maya
Mexico NKG Bloom Maya was grown in the Fraylesca region, in central Chiapas. This region is home to 460 coffee producers who primarily speak their indigenous Tzotzil language; 26 percent of them are women. These smallholder coffee producers cultivate Sarchimor, Costa Rica 95, Marsellesa, Obata, Caturra, Bourbon and Marago in natural shade, preserving the existing ecosystem, rich with native plants and animals.
NKG BLOOM, Por Más Café
The producers of Mexico NKG Bloom Maya are also part of NKG Bloom, an initiative of Neumann Kaffee Gruppe (NKG) to ensure the long-term viability of green coffee supplies and provide smallholder farmers with the opportunities and resources they need to run their farms at full potential and enter pathways out of poverty.
Por Más Café, now part of NKG Bloom, was created by NKG export company Exportadora de Café California (ECC) in 2014, to address the coffee rust crisis. Since then, 4,520 producers have benefitted from the program, more than 5,300 hectares of coffee have been renovated, $11.2 million U.S. has been offered in financing and more than $34 million has been invested in farm renovations.
Por Más Café has since been upgraded to the more holistic NKG Bloom. It provides custom service packages to producers that may include financing, high-quality inputs, seedlings, agronomy and business training, information services, access to markets and new coffee technologies.
Please visit the ECC site to learn more about PMC or this quick blog post to learn about how ECC inspired and informed the creation of NKG Bloom.
