Itumpi AMCOS is a smallholder coffee cooperative located in Tanzania’s Mbozi region. The group was originally founded in 1970 under the name Ujamii by 56 smallholder farmers. In 1994, the organization was renamed Itumpi AMCOS, and it has since grown to 160 active members.
The cooperative sources coffee from the villages of Rungwa and Sambewe, with its processing facility located at 1,500–1,700 meters above sea level. The group produces approximately 266 bags of coffee annually.
Itumpi produces natural and fully washed coffees. Prior to 2019, members processed their coffee at home. Today, farmers deliver freshly harvested red cherries to the factory between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. The cherry is sorted and dried on raised tables before final hulling.
The majority of Itumpi’s coffee is made up of Bourbon derivatives, with approximately 90% N39 and 10% KT 423. The main harvest takes place from June through August, with coffee typically shipping between October and December.
