Ethiopia Gatta Anaerobic Natural

Ethiopia Gatta Anaerobic Natural is grown and harvested in Shantawene village, Sidama Bensa, Ethiopia. The coffee is grown across Gatta Farm’s 32 hectares by 940 producers. Planting, harvesting and processing is done by local residents, many of whom are women.

Once harvested, the cherry is carefully sorted and processed with anaerobic fermentation. The cherry is sealed in airtight tanks for 48 – 100 hours where it undergoes fermentation in an oxygen-free environment. Next, Ethiopia Gatta Anaerobic cherry is sun dried on raised African beds, turned regularly for even drying.

Gatta

Daye Bensa’s Gatta Farm and Lodge was created in the middle of a forested area, rich with rivers and waterfalls and named for a waterfall that lies at its center. Gatta is surrounded by indigenous old forest trees (some more than 100 years old) which shade the coffee trees as well as the drying station. While established in 2008, coffee was first planted on Gatta in 2013, followed by the construction of a drying station in 2017.

Gatta is not only a farm and drying station but also a lodge and training facility dedicated to specialty coffee. During the harvest season, Gatta station offers accommodations for employees as well as for individuals receiving training in coffee processing.

Daye Bensa

Daye Bensa, owned by brothers Asefa and Mulugeta Dukamo, is a coffee grower and exporter in Ethiopia. The company owns 15 washing stations across three districts, and they handle all the coffee they export. Its two farms, in Kaffa and Sidamo, are Organic, UTZ, Rainforest Alliance and C.A.F.E. practices certified. They also receive cherry from out-growers in the surrounding area.

Each year Daye Bensa hosts an Out-Growers Day. Nearly 1,000 farmers gather to celebrate their harvests and to receive second payments for their coffee cherry contributions. Additionally, Daye Bensa rewards the top three farmers from each of the three villages with certificates and cash prizes, recognizing them for consistently delivering high-quality cherries.

Going forward, Daye Benesa is hoping to work with more farmers, to particularly encourage women farmers and to work with Hawassa University, to help students perform research to improve coffee quality.
