Guatemala Santa Rosa Con Manos de Mujer is produced by 20 women in the Santa Rosa department, specifically the villages of Nueva Santa Rosa and Casilla. These women come from coffee-farming families and have inherited not only the wisdom that allows them to produce high-quality coffees but also a legacy of sustainability and deep respect for the land.
In fact, Mayacert (a third-party certification body that works heavily in agriculture and coffee, especially across Latin America) has recognized these 20 women producers with the “Con Manos de Mujer” (With a Woman’s Hands) Certification. This is meant to acknowledge the excellence of the coffee they produce — as well as to recognize the positive impact they have had in their community as leaders in the agricultural sector.
Additionally, Guatemala Santa Rosa Con Manos de Mujer is Rainforest Alliance Certified. This means that their farms meet standards designed to promote biodiversity, environmental conservation, sustainable livelihoods and responsible farming practices.
The producers of Guatemala Santa Rosa Con Manos de Mujer are also participants in Farmer Aid, a social initiative of Unex. This program is aimed at cultivating a resilient livelihood for coffee farmers. It works with 4,500 small producers, in 16 clusters across key coffee regions, providing services in the form of farmer field schools, model farms, recreation centers and medical brigades.
Processing
Guatemala Santa Rosa Con Manos de Mujer is machine pulped and fermented in mucilage for eight hours. Next, the coffee is washed and patio dried for 10 to 15 days, depending on weather conditions. Finally, the coffee is dry milled at La Playona, in Ixchel, and is exported by Unex.
