Honduras Los Colibríes Yellow Catuai is a honey process coffee from producer Ronnie Alfredo Gabrie. The coffee in named Los Colibríes for his farm in San Luis Planes, Santa Barbara.
Los Colibríes
Although Ronnie Gabrie’s father had been a coffee grower, Ronnie began his coffee career in sales, purchasing coffee in 1976 while still in high school. Five years later he began working formally with exporters, deepening his knowledge and passion. In 2014 he followed in his father’s footsteps, purchasing his own farm.
Around the time Ronnie set out as a producer, he suffered a significant accident on Christmas Eve that left him in a coma for 15 days. While in the hospital, he received a book as a gift from a close friend. During his recovery process Ronnie spent time reading this book about birds and their habitats. He was drawn toward the Mayan legend regarding the origin of hummingbirds. Hummingbirds, or Colibrí in Spanish, are said to be divine messengers, deliverers of recovery and health. Ronnie took this as inspiration and decided to name his farm in honor of the bird and the role it played in his recovery.
Over the years, Ronnie has developed his farm, cultivating coffee on 3.8 hectares. His commitment to the project includes investment in his workers who he supports with education. Additionally, Ronnie has explored post-harvest processing at Los Colibríes, creating washed, natural, honeyed, anaerobic, and prolonged fermentation processed offerings. All of this investment and development is evidenced in his recognition by Cup of Excellence. Ronnie has been on the COE winners list three times, with his highest achievement earning ninth place.
