Maira Lizzeth Gomez was raised in the coffee felids of Intibuca. She spent her teenage years helping her parents with their coffee plantations, sparking her own passion for coffee production. As a high school graduate, she used her savings to buy a small plot of land in San Miguelito. Years later Maira was offered a management position at COMIPRONIL, a local cooperative, which prompted her move to Opalaca. There, she and her husband purchased 2.8 hectares of land to cultivate coffee.
Over the past 13 years, Maira Lizzeth Gomez has been an advocate for equality. She promotes growth and empowerment opportunities to local women, many of whom are part of the Lenca indigenous group. (Notably, this group of Lenca producers are vital contributors to Becamo’s women produced NKG Bloom Gea Organic coffee.)
With her husband Gabriel, Maira created Beneficio do Cafe San Miguel in 2018. Together, their mill aims to improve the production, harvesting and processing of quality coffee in their area. Presently, their three sons Gabriel, Daniel and David run most of the activities of the mill and employ many young locals. Her family is evidence of her conviction that consistency yields generational improvements; her mother reached third grade, Maira finished technical school and now her oldest son is an agronomist engineer with a shared passion for coffee.
